Kaili

Kaili city is the capital of Miao and Dong Minority Autonomous Prefecture and the central market town in the southeastern Guizhou, most of travelers come here by road, you might either take a taxi for 2-hour ride from Guiyang airport, the road system is quite good between Guiyang and Kaili; or you might take train from Hunan Province in the east, and Kaili is the main station in this area.  Also, many people fly to Guilin, drive 3-4 days through the remote mountain areas of Longsheng, Sanjiang, Zhaoxing, Congjiang, Rongjiang, end their trips in Kaili and Guiyang.

In the city of Kaili, two places are worth to visit.  The first one is Kaili Museum, where you can have a background knowledge of all minority native culture in this area; the second thing is the Sunday market, market, held every five days. Set along the river, the market retains its amazing size and atmosphere as well as many of its wooden homes and buildings. The Miao and Dong Minorities from the surrounding villages endows the market with their unique characters. They put on their costumes and carrying shoulder poles trading in the market. One would feel that it is indeed not an ordinary market.

Herbal remedies are also available here. Rat poison vendor even display the dead rats to show the efficacy of the poisons. The local beautiful plaited bamboo baskets in every shape and size are waiting eagerly to find their new masters. The pottery jars, kites, paper money and incense are also sold in the market.

Most of the European visitors choose to stay in Kaili for 2-3 nights, it is the only place where basic accommodation facilities are available in this area; it is also convenient to start from Kaili to visit many native villages nearby.  Every attraction is within two hours driving distance.

Numerous ethnic festivals with different styles available to visit in different seasons all the year round, such as the Dragon Boat Festival, Dragon Lantern Festival, Lusheng Performance, Sisters' Meal Festival, New Rice Eating Festival, Miao New Year, ect. It may be said:' Customs and styles are different in a short distance of 10 li; grand festivals occur every three days while minor ones everyday.' The local customs and practices and ethnic dietary culture can be appreciated here.
