Lusheng festival in Gulong

The Lusheng festival  falls on Oct.25, 2008 in Gulong this year, and lasts 3 days.

Lusheng is a kind of bamboo pipes. It acts an important role in Miao culture. The Lusheng festival is one of important festivals in this region, since we Miaos treat this music instrument as our Mum.

Festivals are usually held over a three-day period, the second and third being the most important. Girls arrive dressed in their festival costumes or put on their gorgeous attire on site. A wide range of courtship rituals are practiced. At Zhouxi, near Kaili, man boys of each village play Lusheng pipes while forming a circle, girls follow with a relatively simple dance step to show off their costumes to best advantage.

The local people say, we could hear our mum's voice when we are playing this music instrument. But the old people told us not to play it after rice planting and before rice harvest, since the Lusheng palyers might blow away the rice flowers during this time, which will make us could not get a good harvest in the same year. Therefore, in the past time we did not allow people to do that in the Miao villages, unless after the harvest is over.It is just like the Americans' Thanks Giving Day in some way. What's more,it is not only a simple festival, but also a good dating time for the unmarried people to get to know each other, and become lovers.
