Guangzhou Offers First Food Street This Year

Guangzhou Offers First Food Street This Year     2008-02-20
As Cao Jianliao, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, noted, to trumpet the notoriety of Eating in Guangzhou, the city will launch the first distinctive Food Street which is to be located in the new district of Tianhe or the middle of the old district. He said that the substantial move will be made in the latter half of this year. The decision before it is announced will be put to public vote.

In recent years, the dining industry in Guangzhou has been expanding by double-digit figures. Per capita retail figure has topped that of the whole nation.  In 2006 alone, people in Guangzhou consumed food equivalent of RMB 35 billion.

He went on to say that Guangzhou has attained a high level of notoriety for themes such as "Eat in Guangzhou and Live in Hangzhou". The history of special dishes in Guangdong runs deep. In recent years, with the influx of foreigners and people from other parts of China, Western food, Hunan Food and Sichuan Food have also taken root, thus diversifying the local food culture. The first food street in Guangzhou will try to establish its own unique tradition. The offerings are mainly characterized by local Guangzhou food but other food cultures are also to be absorbed to diversify the menu. Currently the Guangzhou Trade and Economic Commission and the Tourism Bureau are doing the research work for the design of the street.
