Guilin Osmanthus Hotel

We stayed at the Guilin Osmanthus Hotel for a couple of nights in late August. The hotel is within walking distance of the city centre and the riverview rooms have excellent views.

Unfortunately the Hotel staff speak very little English and are generally rude with it. They did not bother to notify me of train tickets that had been delivered to me by my travel agent and on separate occasions denied that they had them when I went to check- on the second occasion I insisted that they must have them and after 20 minutes of denying it they finally agreed to look in their book and strangely enough found them.

On departing Guilin I spent an hour without success trying to find an ATM which would accept my card and, having only enough RMB to get a taxi to the station, asked the currency desk to exchange some USD cash- they refused saying that they were “dirty”, I called the duty manager who again refused the USD and GBP notes. We expained that we were about to go on a 27 hour train journey with no money or food (basically pleading!) but they still refused. I was absolutely appalled and I should add that our next hotel in Xian changed the USD notes without any issue. I would never go back to the hotel but it gets 2* because of its location. The western style breakfast is also very poor but that goes for most hotels in China in this price bracket .
