Hotel room in Hong Kong for April 2009

I have been trying to reserve a hotel room in Hong Kong for the end of April 2009. There must be something huge going on because I can’t get a booking on any of the sites. Have I really left it too late or are the websites not taking bookings this far in advance? I have tried specific hotel websites, I feel like I should just book something so we have a place to stay.

I was told by one friend: “Unlike in many other countries, with a few exceptions, Hong Kong travel operators are mostly unsophisticated and are hopelessly incompetent and incapable of quoting rates more than a few weeks in advance.”

In fact, in April 2009, people attending Canton Fair in Guangzhou, will also visit Hong Kong, lots of trade fairs held in Hong Kong in April, too. The hotel rates are called Sea Food rate in this peoriod. Hotels are in such high demand at times especially during fair and convention time etc that prices simply fluctuate.

Either any hotels or hotel reservation center can reserve a room for you 10 months prior the Fair. I am thinking about booking a hotel/airfare/tour packages through a travel agent. I know that my trip operator will make some money through my airline tickets booking or tours, that is why she could offer me a package quotation, and reserve everything in advance accordingly.
